Blogging is truly a rewarding activity.  It is an opportunity to share your message.  You are free to share your thoughts without censorship.  There are few things in life that are as exciting as writing content and having it read by an online community.

The nice thing about having a blog is that it is yours.  You are in control of the entire site.  Not only is the content yours, but so is the entire layout.  You can be as creative as you like.  There are also easy to use themes where the layout has already been designed.  These templates allow for a fast and simple set-up.  Your blog can be designed and live within minutes.

The possibilities are limitless for your blog.  It can be used to promote a brick and mortar  business.  A blog can be a stand-alone business.  It can be used to sell products, services, or gather referrals.  You can take advantage of scale by joining an affiliate network and post ads for leading brands.

A blog does not have to be a business.  It can simply be a hobby.  It can be a platform for you to share your message.  It is a great way to build community.  It enables you to share with people who have a common interest.  Blogging is a way to meet people and make lasting connections with people who you otherwise would never have met.

Step 1: Choosing a host

Creating a website might sound like a major project.  In reality, anyone can do it.  There are companies like Hostgator that make the process simple.

The first step is to select a hosting package.  Hosting is space on a webserver.  This is where your website is housed.  It is where all of your content is stored including text, photos, and videos.

Hostgator offers different shared hosting plans.  There is a plan that is right for any type of website.  Instead of having to incur the cost of buying your own server, Hostgator allows you to share space with other websites.  This allows you to only pay for the space you need.

Don’t get overwhelmed trying to select a package.  First, sign-up for the most affordable plan.  You can always upgrade in the future as your blog grows or if you create additional websites.

The Baby Plan is the most popular plan.  It is the middle of the road plan that allows for hosting more than one website.  If this is your first website, the Hatching Plan will meet your needs.

Every plan comes with unlimited storage and email addresses.  The drag-n-drop website builder will allow you to design and build your blog without a web designer. You do not have to be a computer programmer or understand coding.

Once you have decided on a package, just click on the “Sign Up Now” button and follow the simple instructions screen.

Step 2: Register a domain

To be found online, a domain name is needed.  To stand out from the competition, a good name is needed.  The simpler the better.  You want people to be able to remember your name with little effort.

Do some brainstorming.  Think of a few names that best reflect your website.  Hostgator has a find a domain tool to assist you in finding a domain that is available. Type in different names and select the one that you like best.

There are different options with registering a domain.  You can register a domain with one company and have it hosted with another.  You can also register your domain with Hostgator and have your hosting and domain registered at the same place.

After you select a domain, you have the option of keeping it private.  When you register a domain, you have to tell ICANN who you are.  Anyone can look up who owns the domain.  Your home address is even visible.  If you select Domain Privacy Protection, this personal information is replaced with Hostgator’s.

Hosting is renewed on an annual basis.  It can be registered for longer periods.  Different options are available.

Step 3: Installing WordPress

Congratulations! You now own a website.  Now let’s get your blog created.

WordPress is the most popular option.  Currently, 20% of websites use WordPress.  WordPress is to blogging what Google is to search engines.  WordPress is also free to use.

Check your email.  Open the welcome email from Hostgator.  Click on the link to your cPanel (Control Panel).  Use your username and password to access the cPanel.  Click on the (Quick Install) button to find the most popular installs.  WordPress is on the top.

Click on “WordPress”.  Fill out the form.

You are almost finished.

The last step is to click “Install WordPress”.

You just set up your own website and installed blogging software. The only thing that you have left to do is to write and publish your first post.  A great place to start is to write about what motivated you to create your blog.

I wish you the best of luck with your new website.
